ICC Arbitration & ADR Technical Webinar review

Opus 2 was proud to recently sponsor and take part in the latest ICC Arbitration & ADR Technical Webinar held by the International Chamber of Commerce. The event - attended by more than 100 practitioners - welcomed experts from notable law firms and chambers including, Clifford Chance, DLA Piper, and Twenty Essex, each of them tackling in detail the fundamental elements arbitration advocates must consider when undertaking their first arbitral appointments.

During the keynote session ‘Top Tips for your first time’, Belinda McRae, Barrister, and Sara Masters QC, Barrister and Arbitrator both of Twenty Essex, teamed up with Ben Sanderson, Partner at DLA Piper, to give attendees practical and actionable advice on a number of topics including:

  • building relationships with the institutions, national committees, and clients, including appropriate arbitrator-focused business development
  • double-hatting;
  • non-participating parties and default awards –a common theme for those first few appointments;
  • document-only arbitrations: how inquisitorial should one be
  • tips, tricks and traps for drafting awards for the first time

The final session saw our Client Solutions Director, Andy Wright give a hands-on demonstration of the Opus 2 platform. Showing attendees how the unique Opus 2 technology can be used by arbitrators to effectively facilitate the writing of awards. Andy also provided a walk-through of the steps that arbitrators can take pre, during, and post-hearing so as to be in a better place to write an award.

The event marked the start of a wider collaboration agreement spanning the course of a year, which will see Opus 2 working in association with the International Chamber of Commerce to increase awareness, learning, and education around the use of technology within the arbitration community and the legal sector at large.
